Calgary Q&A

Q. Why does the Calgary Food Bank give out only six food baskets per family per year, while the Vancouver Food Bank gives out one per week?

A. Carl DeLine, manager of Calgary’s Inter-Faith Food Bank, says Vancouver has 30 different food banks.

The one that gives out food weekly to people does not distribute a full week’s worth of food, but rather about three day’s worth.

Calgary’s Inter-Faith Food Bank gives out more food in its hampers and also encourages people to seek help for the problems causing their hunger.

“A lot of these people have more problems than a lack of food,” DeLine says. “For example, they may have a need for a regular income.”

Because the Food Bank encourages these people to seek help for their problems, it has found most people need the Food Bank’s services an average of three times.
